The 2022 Oscars were going along swimmingly, with co-hosts Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes and Regina Hall doing some funny bits and the musical performances (including Beyoncé‘s opening number and Megan Thee Stallion‘s surprise “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” rap!) getting the crowd going… until Best Actor nominee Will Smith apparently punched presenter Chris Rock in the face?!?!?
The gobsmacking moment came out of nowhere as Rock was onstage doing some crowd work before handing out the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature. Making a crack about Jada Pinkett Smith being bald, Rock joked that she’d be starring in G.I. Jane 2 (a reference to Demi Moore‘s 1997 drama G.I. Jane, in which she played a female soldier who shaved her head).
“Jada, love you,” he said. “G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see it.”
Pinkett Smith is bald because she openly suffers from alopecia, which causes hair loss. She rolled her eyes at the line, but didn’t otherwise react openly to it.
