On June 8, 2023, seven counts of mishandling sensitive materials and obstruction of the government’s investigation into the storage of the documents at Donald Trump’s Florida property were brought against him. False statements, obstruction of justice, and purposeful retention of materials in violation of the Espionage Act are among the charges. Trump is the first ex-president to be charged with a federal crime. He is expected to show up in court on June 13th, a Tuesday.
The Justice Department looked into whether Trump had violated the law by bringing sensitive information home after leaving the White House, and that’s how the indictment came to be. In August 2022, the FBI raided Trump’s residence and collected some 300 sensitive documents, some of which were inscribed with the designations “Top Secret” or “Secret.”
